In his youth Rich was an entrepreneur and owner of several Shell service & gas stations and a towing company. He later parlayed his business experience into a long career in automotive and RV service sales. Throughout his life he volunteered for several political candidates and served on the Park Forest - Chicago Heights School District 163 schoolboard; passing his love of activism onto his children. Rich was a devoted fan of Chicago sports, passionately supporting the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox, often sharing the excitement and camaraderie of the games with those around him.

Richard also found great pleasure in RVing and boating, pursuits that allowed him to embrace the beauty of nature and the freedom of the open road and water. He was Vice-Commadore and Treasurer of the Riverdale and Triplex Boat Clubs at Lake Calumet and enjoyed the friendships he made with fellow boat enthusiasts at Wind Jammers and Waterfront Pub. The road called to him one last time in March when he loaded up his RV and traveled with Claire to Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
