James Dawson Davis, Sr.

December 1, 1944 — January 7, 2026

James Dawson Davis, Sr., born on December 1, 1944, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was a loving husband to Susan Geary Davis, father to James Jr. (Kimberly) and Melissa (James Brody), grandfather to Charles James Brody, Beau Dawson Brody, and Emerson June Davis. He deeply loved his brothers Carl, Bob (deceased), and Bill (deceased), as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. A friend to many, his sweet, kind, and helpful nature was obvious to all.

Born in the Village of Golf on Chicago's North Shore to Dr. Carl Davis, Jr. and Marianne Hoover Davis, Jim was a standout on the football field for North Shore Country Day School. There, he was a team captain and earned All-Star recognition from a variety of outlets, including the Chicago Tribune. His success on the field led to a college scholarship at Memphis State University.

After his time in Memphis, he became one of the first managers at Butch McGuire's, where Butch served as a meaningful mentor. It was there he earned the nickname "Duke", since he was known by many as the Duke of Division Street.

James had a deep passion for gardening, riding his motorcycle, and photography. But his number one passion was supporting his children through their athletic careers. He was a mainstay on the fence line at New Trier football, field hockey, and softball games. When they went off to college, he traveled all around the Midwest to support the Knox College football and DePauw University field hockey teams. This tradition continued as James Jr. and Melissa went into coaching. He was their most loyal fan.

He stood out from the crowd not only in stature, but by his recognizable handlebar mustache. He could be seen driving through the North Shore on a sunny day with aviator shades, behind the wheel of his Chevy Tahoe, with a Pepsi can in arm's reach. He was deeply loved and will be sorely missed.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the "Duke" Scholarship Fund, which will provide recognition to local athletes who embody his high-character, hard-working spirit. Checks can be mailed to Illinois High School Powerlifting Association, 1033 Whitfield Rd. Northbrook 60062.

A celebration of life will be held at Christ Church (784 Sheridan Rd., Winnetka) on January 30 at 1:00pm.
